To date, I’ve spent a decade in each of three callings.
After business and law school, I worked as a lawyer in private practice, becoming a partner in the tax group in a major Calgary firm. When the door to the corporate world opened to me, I accepted an executive role at one of Canada’s large banks, working ten years in both line and headquarters roles. I then started my own business: a five-store bakery in Toronto with 40 employees and a loyal customer base of corporations and individuals. With the closure of that business in the 2020-21 pandemic, I began working on a new business, slated to open in late 2021.
Behind the scenes, I have always been fascinated by how our minds work, and from 2013 to 2017, I trained as a therapist at the Toronto Institute of Relational Psychotherapy, becoming a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario in 2018.
When to engage in psychotherapy and when to pursue career coaching? For some people, therapy is the clear answer: they know they want to do an exploration of their whole life and how they are feeling, how they are engaging with everyone: family, friends and colleagues.
For others, they have a specific career issue they want to discuss in maybe one or a handful of sessions; they have a current challenge in only work and the rest of life feels good and vibrant.
For some people, however, the difference between therapy and coaching – and which is right for them – is not clear and they value an opportunity to discuss whether therapy or coaching is what they need.
